Strelitzia Reginae
Common name: Bird of paradise.
The Strelitzia genre includes 4 or 5 species of evergreen plants. The most common species is the Strelitzia reginae. It grows in groups which may grow to 1m high. The stunning inflorescence is made up of a horizontal boat-shaped bract, of a purple, red-tinged colour which goes on to produce flowers with three narrow, orange or yellow sepals; an orange petal which is smaller than the others and two bluish petals with an arrow shaped tip. Flowering takes place from spring to summer.
Origin: Southern and subtropical areas of Africa.
Temperature: Up to -4°C.
Average watering. Sun and semi shade in summer.
