Nerium oleander
(blanc, rose et rouge)
Common name: Adelfa, baladre, pink laurel.
The compactness and spectacular long-lasting flowering of this shrub have led to it becoming the symbol of the Mediterranean summer. Its spear-shaped, evergreen leaves grow together in groups of 2 to 3 and are of a medium-green colour. Flowering depends on the variety of plant and it may be just one flower on its own or two, which are not particularly fragrant but they do come in a range of colours, and last the whole summer.
After flowering, long pods with woolly seeds are produced.
If grown in a pot, the pot should be more deep than wide to leave space for its long roots. Thanks to its abundant flowers, which contrasts with its green leaves, the shrubs grow and look spectacular in gardens and parks. It is the queen of balconies and terraces in winter when grown in pots. If its stems are cut, it releases a white milky substance which may be slightly toxic but harmless nonetheless.
Origin: Temperate parts of Asia, Mediterranean region
