Chamaerops Humilis
Chamaerops humilis, known as palmetto, is the only species of palm tree (i.e., of the palm family) which is native to continental Europe and the only species of the Chamaerops genus. It is a charismatic species, found in abundance throughout the Spanish Mediterranean coast, the hearts of which are eaten although it is not a commercialized product.
It is seen in the dry regions along the Mediterranean coast, from Italy to the west, but not in France. It is especially abundant on the Mediterranean coasts of Spain especially those of Andalusia and the north of Morocco. It is one of the most typical species to be found in the Cabo de Gata mountain range in Almeria. It is perfect for decorating the garden as a central plant in a rockery or near a pool.
